Henry Piddington emerged as a prominent figure during this period; he authored nearly 40 papers on tropical storms between 1835 and 1855 and introduced the term ‘cyclone,’ derived from its resemblance to a coiling snake. Piddington’s landmark work, “Laws of the Storms,” published in 1842, laid foundational concepts for understanding storm behavior.

In response to devastating events such as a tropical cyclone that struck Calcutta in 1864 and subsequent famines attributed to monsoon failures in 1866 and 1873, there was a concerted effort to centralize meteorological data collection and analysis. This initiative culminated in the establishment of the India Meteorology Department on January 15, 1875. Henry Francis Blanford was appointed as its first Meteorological Reporter. Over time, the headquarters moved from Calcutta to Shimla in 1905, then to Pune in 1928, and finally settled in New Delhi in 1944.

Organizational Structure

The IMD is led by the Director General of Meteorology; as of now, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra holds this position. The department comprises six Regional Meteorological Centres situated across major cities: Chennai, Guwahati, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, and New Delhi. In addition to these regional centers, each state capital hosts its own Meteorological Centre.

Observational data is also derived from meteorological instruments on Indian merchant navy vessels and Indian Navy ships. Notably, IMD was a pioneer among developing countries by implementing a message-switching computer system to facilitate global data exchange.

Core Responsibilities

The IMD undertakes several critical tasks encompassing weather observations, communications, forecasting services, and general weather-related information dissemination. In collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), IMD utilizes satellite data from IRS series satellites as well as those from INSAT for comprehensive weather monitoring across the Indian subcontinent.

As one of six global Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres under WMO’s Tropical Cyclone Programme, IMD serves as a regional nodal agency responsible for forecasting tropical cyclones that form north of the Equator over the Indian Ocean. This includes not only naming cyclones but also disseminating timely warnings to minimize risks associated with these severe weather events.

Recent Initiatives

The IMD continues to innovate its methodologies by launching various initiatives aimed at enhancing its monitoring capabilities. One such initiative is the System of Aerosol Monitoring and Research (SAMAR), launched in January 2016. This program focuses on studying black carbon concentrations along with assessing radiative properties of aerosols and their climatological impacts on environmental visibility.

This initiative involves deploying a sophisticated network comprising sixteen aethalometers for black carbon measurement, twelve sky radiometers for cloud observation, and twelve nephelometers aimed at analyzing aerosol properties further contributing to climate science research.
